From China in FCL or LCL format – precise selection algorithms

On the basic factors and characteristics of cargo that make LCL (less-than-container-load) transportation possible and profitable

Whether to ship cargo from China in a full container (FCL) or as part of a consolidated cargo (LCL) isn't always easy for cargo owners to make the right choice. In anticipation of the TransRussia 2026 exhibition, TELS GLOBAL specialists have made another attempt to simplify the selection process for transport customers.

STEP ONE . Apply basic criteria to the cargo to determine the appropriateness of choosing the LCL format (a starting "checklist"):

// Cargo is less than 40% of the container's volume. This figure is relative; sometimes it can be profitable to transport up to 70% of the volume as part of a consolidated cargo. A range of 40-60% of the volume is quite reasonable for both formats; in this case, the choice depends on a combination of factors.
// It's possible to extend delivery lead times by 7-21 days for significant savings. The speed of cargo consolidation before shipment can vary significantly between different forwarders. If a forwarder has a constant flow of cargo, the frequency of LCL container shipments increases, and shipping costs remain on average 30-40%.
// Simple cargo, easily consolidated with other cargo. "Complex cargo" (temperature-sensitive, hazardous, fragile, expensive) often requires minimal handling and other manipulations—this is a factor against LCL, especially if the cargo is too valuable to save on logistics. Dangerous cargo can sometimes be transported in a consolidated manner with other cargo.

STEP TWO . If the cargo meets the three above criteria, request an LCL shipping quote from your chosen contractors, including time and cost options. Clarify what related tasks the forwarder will undertake (what is included in the rate). Find out the forwarder's liability for damage.

STEP THREE . When deciding whether to cooperate, consider the following factors: cost, timeframe, included services, liability terms, and the forwarder's reputation.

For a more comprehensive discussion on reducing your logistics costs through LCL delivery, TELS will be waiting for you at the TELS GLOBAL stand #C7071 at the TransRussia 2026 exhibition from March 17–19!
