Trends In e-commerce Logistics: How It Will Change In 2025

Acceleration of delivery, expansion of pick-up point networks, AI, robotics and outsourcing - in this news we talk about trends in e-com logistics in Russia.

The volume of online trade in Russia continues to grow: in the first half of 2025, it increased by 36% compared to the same period last year. Russians spent 5.3 trillion rubles on online shopping. This was reported in a study by the Association of Internet Trade Companies (AKIT). The e-commerce sector places increasingly stringent demands on logistics. Companies operating in the e-commerce market are forced to adapt to new conditions: buyers expect fast delivery, a wide choice of pick-up points, flexible services and convenience at all stages of interaction.

Of course, traditionally, the e-com structure is dominated by marketplaces that consolidate online trade on their platforms. According to Data Insight, in the second half of 2024, the share of Wildberries and Ozon reached 56% and 21% of the total number of orders and 30% and 23% of the total sales volume, respectively. Marketplaces set new standards for speed and level of delivery.

Speed first

One of the main trends is ensuring delivery of orders within one to two days. According to a TransRussia Connect survey conducted in 2025, 88% of Russian companies selling consumer goods consider prompt delivery to be the main customer expectation. Fast delivery not only improves the level of service, but also allows for optimizing the load on the transport fleet and increasing profitability.

"In the conditions of a decline in the freight transportation market, the trend for fast delivery is quite feasible. Freight carriers that have increased their vehicle fleet in 2023-2024 need orders. Especially those who have acquired vehicles on lease. They will be ready to carry out transportation in short terms, as this will allow them to increase the utilization of their vehicle fleet and the efficiency of its use. In the near future, fast delivery may become one of the key factors in supporting the freight transportation and logistics market," said Lev Starikovsky, Development Director of Monopoly JSC.

Pick-up point for every home and region

At the same time, the importance of pick-up points is growing. More than half of the participants in the same study (59%) identified the development of a pick-up point network as a key logistics strategy. Modern marketplaces are actively expanding their partner networks, including small towns and rural settlements, which allows for greater coverage and flexibility for buyers.

One of the significant trends is the shift of logistics centers towards the regions. 35% of companies are already feeling this movement. The development of regional warehouses and distribution centers allows to reduce delivery costs and bring goods closer to the end consumer. However, this approach requires accurate demand forecasting and competent inventory management to avoid shortages or surpluses of goods locally. According to Lev Starikovsky, on the one hand, it is easier to organize delivery from the largest cities than from the regions, which is due to the large supply on the freight market. At the same time, it is cheaper and faster to move goods within one region or between them due to the shortened route, he believes.

AI is our everything

In the technical aspect of logistics, digitalization and automation of processes have been gaining increasing importance for several years now. Artificial intelligence is used for intelligent routing, which allows taking into account many factors: traffic conditions, weather conditions, pick-up point work schedules and customer preferences. In addition, AI helps to forecast demand, which contributes to a more accurate distribution of inventory across warehouses. Modern routing and data analysis systems allow an additional reduction in logistics costs by 15-20%, increasing the efficiency of transport services, says Ilya Sinchurin, Sales Director of the Yandex Delivery service.

Warehouse robotization is another important trend. Modern warehouses increasingly use automated systems for sorting, packing and assembling orders. In some cases, delivery is also carried out using autonomous robots - such projects are already being implemented by companies such as Yandex and Russian Post. Intelligent warehouse management systems are also being implemented, which integrate with other business applications and allow for optimization of all stages of order processing.

Subscription?

Although subscription services have not become a mass trend in general, their importance in certain segments continues to grow. For example, the WB Club service from Wildberries, which offers discounts on subscriptions, has already attracted more than one million users in just three months, as noted by ComNews. This indicates the high efficiency of such tools in increasing customer loyalty and engagement.

Other trends: outsourcing, multichannel, obsolescence of transport

Companies are also increasingly resorting to outsourcing logistics services. This allows them to reduce costs by 10-30% and scale up during periods of peak demand, such as during promotions and seasonal sales. This point of view was expressed by Ilya Sinchurin.

Multichanneling also remains an important area — the use of several delivery and customer interaction channels. Along with this trend, import substitution has long been developing. Multichanneling allows for increased convenience for users, as well as reduced dependence on individual logistics partners. Import substitution, in turn, strengthens local supply chains and stimulates the development of internal infrastructure.

Finally, we cannot ignore the obsolescence of transport. The average age of vehicles is increasing, they require more frequent inspections and maintenance, and fleet renewal is becoming a significant investment.

Thus, logistics in the e-commerce sector is currently undergoing large-scale changes. Companies are adapting to new challenges by accelerating delivery, digitalization, regional development and increasing flexibility. Competition in the market will increase, and those who can integrate innovations faster and build a reliable logistics infrastructure will gain a significant advantage.
